Rebuilding After Witnessing Familial Homicide: Trauma Counselling for a Child Bereaved by Violence

According to the aunt, she brought her nieces, K and D, to the organisation because they had witnessed the murder of their mother (referred to as D in some parts of the report) at the hands of their biological father, M. The aunt explained that her sister had been living with M at his family’s home along with the children until the night of the fatal incident. The mother had been trying to protect M during the violent episode. The children were present in the house that night. The following morning, when the older child (K) asked her mother for food and received no response, the children realised something was wrong. They sought help from neighbours after the alleged father had beaten their mother to death. A murder case was immediately opened against M. He was arrested, and the children were referred for bereavement counselling to address the profound trauma of witnessing their mother’s murder.

Intervention

The child participated in a forensic assessment, attended four sessions of court preparation, and received eight sessions of trauma-focused counselling. The trauma of witnessing her mother’s death at the hands of her father left a deep and lasting emotional wound. In one violent act, the child’s fundamental sense of safety, love, trust, and security was destroyed. The person who should have been her protector became the source of her greatest fear, severely impacting her ability to trust others and feel safe in relationships. Over time, this experience profoundly shaped her view of herself and the world as fragile, unpredictable, and dangerous.Counselling focused on helping her process this complex grief and trauma, develop healthy coping mechanisms for intense feelings of fear and anger, and gradually rebuild a sense of stability, control, and hope.

Outcomes

Healing was a gradual process that required consistent patience, support, and compassion. Through the intervention, the child began to develop effective coping strategies to manage overwhelming emotions of fear and anger. She slowly regained a sense of security and personal control. As daily routines stabilised and trust was cautiously rebuilt with support from her aunt and the therapeutic process—the child showed increased confidence, greater independence, and a renewed willingness to participate in everyday activities and relationships. The legal process concluded with the alleged perpetrator (M) being sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment. The counselling intervention played a vital role in supporting the child’s journey toward emotional recovery, helping her move beyond the shadows of devastating loss and begin to rediscover hope and a safer sense of self.
