Reclaiming Safety After Familial Rape: A Young Boy’s Healing Journey Through Forensic Support, Court Preparation, and Counselling at the Teddy Bear Clinic

According to the mother (B), her son L was brought to the Teddy Bear Clinic following a reported rape. The mother explained that the assault occurred on 15 July 2022. She became aware of the abuse the next day when her son returned home. The alleged perpetrator was the mother’s uncle a family member who raped the boy while they were alone together and other family members were not present at home. When L arrived at his mother’s residence after the incident, she immediately noticed that his face was swollen. In distress, the child disclosed to his mother that his uncle had raped him. The mother promptly took him to the hospital for medical examination and care. Hospital staff referred them to the police station, where a formal rape case was opened against the alleged offender.

Intervention

The child received a multi-component support programme at the Teddy Bear Clinic, consisting of: – A forensic assessment – Nine dedicated sessions of court preparation – Ten sessions of trauma-focused counselling Initially, the boy presented with significant fear and anxiety. He avoided eye contact, responded to questions with single-word answers, and struggled with persistent sleep disturbances, including frequent nightmares. He required constant reassurance to feel safe, which created considerable challenges for the mother in maintaining her work responsibilities and daily routine. The therapeutic process focused on helping the child gradually process the trauma, reduce overwhelming anxiety and fear, develop effective coping strategies, rebuild a sense of safety and personal control, and prepare emotionally and practically for any involvement in the legal process.

Outcomes

With consistent, compassionate, and trauma-informed intervention, the boy slowly began to manage his intense feelings of fear more effectively. He developed practical coping tools that helped him regain a growing sense of security and agency over time. As therapeutic routines became established and trust was carefully rebuilt with his mother, the therapist, and his everyday environment the child demonstrated clear signs of emerging confidence. These improvements were visible in: – Better and more restful sleep with reduced nightmares – Greater independence in daily tasks – A renewed willingness to participate in activities and interact with others The legal proceedings concluded with the alleged offender receiving a 40-year prison sentence. This significant outcome brought a powerful sense of justice, finality, and enhanced safety for both the child and his mother, further strengthening the foundation for the boy’s ongoing emotional recovery and growing self-assurance. Through the integrated forensic, court-preparation, and counselling support provided at the Teddy Bear Clinic, this young boy moved step by step from deep fear, withdrawal, and disruption toward restored safety, improved sleep, renewed confidence, and a hopeful reconnection with childhood.
