Gentle Healing at Four: A Young Boy’s Recovery from Inappropriate Touch and Environmental Trauma Through Play Therapy at the Teddy Bear Foundation

Background

O was sexually assaulted by a boy in the neighborhood, who was introduced to her by her friend. She did not disclose immediately to her mother about what had happened to her. After a few days after being sexually assaulted by the boy, O met him on her way from seeing her friend, when the boy saw O he approached her and physically assaulted her. O’s friends went to call her mom and told her that they were beating her daughter, the mother rushed outside and saw her daughter being beaten up by the boy. The mother stopped the fight and took O home. When she got home, she asked O why was that boy hitting her and after questioning her that is when O disclosed that she was raped by the boy few days back. The mother and O went to open a case of rape, and she was referred to Teddy Bear Foundation.

Intervention:

A rapport was built with O by using various social skills, techniques and values. In the first session O was very open and interactive and was able to share her story. O presented with anger issues. This anger was displayed towards her family only and there were no complaints about her from school. Role play exercises to deal with the anger and how to address the anger were done. O was given activities to do at home so that she could deal with her anger in real-life scenarios and also realise what triggered her anger. The activities helped as O was able to recognize her anger and deal with her anger in different healthy ways.

Outcome

Trauma informed counselling was adopted with O. The mother reported that she could see a difference in O’s behavior more than when she was seeing the psychologist. She enjoyed a good healthy relationship with her family and understood that it was not her fault that she was sexually violated.
