We recently had the privilege of attending Parliament’s Statutory Rape Enquiry & Stakeholders Engagement at the Premier Hotel a vital forum tackling one of South Africa’s most pressing crises: protecting our children from sexual violence. Amid powerful discussions on legal reforms, prevention, and justice, two voices stood out for their unwavering commitment and expertise.
The Teddy Bear Foundation, has been a beacon of for 40 years! We provide free, holistic services to children and families shattered by abuse trauma counseling, forensic assessments, legal support, and innovative diversion programs for young offenders to break cycles of harm. Under Dr. Omah’s guidance, we’ve influenced landmark Constitutional Court rulings, like the decriminalization of consensual acts among minors in the Teddy Bear Clinic case, ensuring laws serve justice without further traumatizing youth. Our work isn’t just support; it’s systemic change, holding government accountable and amplifying survivors’ voices. We are transforming lives daily.
And at the heart of it all, Dr. Shaheda Omar, Clinical Director and a true force of nature. With over two decades at the Foundation, Dr. Omar’s career is a masterclass in resilience and advocacy. From developing groundbreaking diversion handbooks and mentoring professionals, to litigating at the Constitutional Court for decriminalizing outdated Sexual Offences Act provisions, she’s redefined child protection. Despite facing racial barriers in her own education (studying via UNISA after being denied at Wits), she’s authored peer-reviewed articles, sat on national task teams, and earned accolades for her passion-driven fight against injustice. Her insight into the psyche of abuse survivors? Unparalleled. Dr. Omar doesn’t just treat wounds, she prevents them, ensuring no child faces secondary victimization.
In her words, echoing the room’s call to action: “We must prioritize ongoing support for victims & families to break the cycle of abuse.” Absolutely spot on. Events like this remind us that collaboration across sectors government, NGOs, and communities is key to ending this epidemic.
Grateful for leaders like Dr. Omar and organizations like Teddy Bear Foundation who turn pain into progress. Let’s amplify her work. Share your thoughts below, or tag a colleague in child rights advocacy.
